Offbeat Destinations in Rajasthan
Rajasthan is often referred to as the Land of Maharajas- a place famed for its prolific history, vibrant culture and majestic palaces. From the Amer Fort in Jaipur to the serene Lake Pichola in Udaipur and from the Jaisalmer Fort to the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan is replete with tourist attractions. But the vast land also has many hidden treasures waiting to be explored. Sawai Madhopur
Known for its varied topography, wild tracts and natural surroundings, Sawai Madhopur also stands out for its forts and palaces. Its treasures include the fabled Ranthambore National Park and a grand fort perched high above, whose origins date back to the 8th century. Go on a safari to feel like the kings of yore who went hunting or just visit the fort and be in awe of it.
Alwar
One of the oldest cities in Rajasthan, Alwar nestles in the lap of verdant hills. Alwar is home to many royal palaces, including the haunted Bhangarh Fort. Apart from all the royalty you will experience here, Alwar also boasts abundant flora and fauna, especially at the not-to-be-missed Sariska National Park. Alwar is undeniably a traveller’s delight.
Bundi
As if trying to escape from all the chaos, Bundi hides in a narrow valley of the Aravali hills and is like an oasis in the arid region. The quaint little town scores high on attractions, given its forts and mansions, but what stand out are the countless step wells. The charming place has made its way into many cinematic and literary works.
Shekhawati
Shekhawati, known for its wealthy merchants, showcases the opulent havelis which belonged to them. They stand tall as open art galleries, adorned with paintings and murals. If you aren’t an art aficionado, you can also explore Nawalgarh and Mandawa in the region.
Kuldhara
Once a prosperous village, mysteriously, Kuldhara’s inhabitants left their homes overnight. While folklore has many interesting theories to offer, locals believe that the village was haunted and cursed. The ghost town is a must-visit, if you are drawn by nightly tours and the mysterious appeal of the place.
