Better Together
Fresh out of a mechanical engineering course from BITS Pilani in 1967, Nikunj Lohia moved to Delhi from his native Kolkata at the young age of 21 and singlehandedly set up East India Udyog Limited in 1971. It started as it almost always does within the community: his family gave him a small amount of money, a sort of a seed capital, to start a business. “I started the company as a transformer manufacturing concern although in the last 43 years, it has diversified into the manufacturing of conductors, electrical turnkey projects and real estate too,” says Lohia, the chairman of the company. East India Udyog Limited produces over 60,000 kms of aluminium conductors per annum, and has also forayed into the EPC project business since 2006.
